Tucked into a riverine forest setting on the very edge of Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve is an intimate tented camp so peaceful, elegant and close to the best of the game viewing that safari-goers visit it time and again. This sister camp to Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment offers the quintessential East African safari experience with a generous dash of old-world glamour. The vintage atmosphere transports you back to the golden age of exploration, while still delivering all modern comforts. From thundering herds during the Great Migration to resident big cats stalking the golden plains, wildlife encounters here are truly spectacular. After thrilling game drives, return to butlers who remember exactly how you take your gin and tonic, and dinner tables set under acacia trees illuminated by lantern light.
The camp exudes an old-style safari ambience, with its hardwood floors, polished silver and sparkling crystal set against the backdrop of the open Mara Plains and their abundant wildlife. Enjoy Pan-African cuisine under the stars, attentive staff, super-comfortable seating areas and a pool you can do laps in.
Acccommodation comprises 18 suites set in two intimate camps that just beg to be used by honeymooners. The design combines classical safari elegance with traditional African style – picture beautiful antiques, wood-framed beds, leather chairs, leather trunks and framed maps, and your own personal butler. The suites also have an overhead fan, a lovely en-suite bathroom with twin hand basins and a private veranda for settling back to gaze at the riverine forest and the Mara plains.
See wildebeest, zebra, kongoni, topi, elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, lion, cheetah, leopard, black rhino, Thomson's gazelle, hyaena, jackal and birds aplenty on walking safaris and day and night game drives. Go birding in the camp's riverine forest and Sabaringo Creek, with a guide. Follow the Mara Hippo Trail or the Oloololo Escarpment Trail, which leads to the top of the 500-metre escarpment, with panoramic views. Soar above the plains in a hot air balloon and visit a local Masai village.
The location is simply unbeatable - perched right at the edge of the Oloololo escarpment, sundowners on your private veranda offer front-row seats to the drama of the Mara unfolding below in all its wild glory.
Book a hot air balloon safari well in advance. Drifting silently above the plains at dawn, watching predators on their morning hunts is an experience not to be missed.
The camp is divided into two sections (north and south), each with nine tents. If privacy is high on your wish list, request a tent furthest from the central areas - though you might have a slightly longer walk to the pool and dining area.
The Time + Tide Foundation is dedicated to preserving natural environments and supporting nearby communities, and guests contribute to sustainability purely by visiting their hotels. The foundation focuses on community and school-based learning, female empowerment, health, and wildlife conservation. Through initiatives like student sponsorship, it aims to ensure the long-term prosperity of wildlife economies and foster positive social change in Time + Tide communities.
A contribution of $10 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
