About Bomani Tented Lodge

Private reserve with a community focus near Hwange National Park

Bomani offers its guest an authentic bush experience with a strong community focus and unique game-viewing opportunities with some of the best guides in the industry. This simple lodge is warm and well-placed, sitting adjacent to the southeast portion of Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park and the game-rich Ngamo Plains. During the dry season, Hwange becomes a hub for elephants in the region - large herds can be seen congregating at water holes throughout the day (seeing these charismatic animals interact around water is some of the best game viewing to be had in the bush). The region is also known for its reliable predators, especially lions and wild dogs. Because it's situated on a private reserve, Bomani enjoys considerably more freedom of movement - drives are not restricted to daylight hours and off-roading is possible. And, because of its positioning near a low-traffic area of Hwange, guests can expect to see little in the way of other vehicles even when inside the national park. Other than Chamelthorn Lodge, this camp is the only other big 5 game viewing camp in Hwange.

Property details

The main camp is perfectly situated, giving you an elevated perch with full views of the busy Bomani pan. Beneath the large, open-sided thatch structure of the main area, you'll find a lounge with wicker chairs and sofas, inviting you to gather with good company and enjoy the remote wonder of the bush. The dining rooms consists of tables that can be separated to seat private meals or joined together for one long, convivial banquet. The bar serves all the standards, including especially tasty G&Ts for the perfect pairing to any evening. The whole camp is solar, exemplifying a commitment to sustainable tourism and ecological enrichment.

You will find a few different styles of accommodation at Bomani. You have the option to stay in one of their styles of tents or in the larger bungalow. The five Saddlebill tents combine function and comfort for a unique bush experience. From the tent, you will have views across Ngamo plain to the Bomani Pan. The four Spurwing tents also feature a large flysheet for extra shade and a veranda overlooking the water hole. All of the stilted tents have canvas walls and mesh windows. They come equipped with en-suite bathrooms and either a standing or ceiling fan. There is one thatched bungalow - a large, cool brick building with an open-plan arrangement with large, comfy leather sofas in the lounge. Lastly, you'll find the Sable Suite, a 2-bedroom family tent with two bathrooms, a spacious lounge/dining room area and two outdoor showers for enjoying an extra touch of nature.

Bomani invites their guests to explore the bush through a host of experiences not found elsewhere. Walk with rhino. Sight animals from a rail car. Track an animal on foot or watch them from a hide. Offering an experimental approach to a traditional safari experience, the camp combines novel game-viewing opportunities without sacrificing any of the comforts of home. In addition to the well-appointed tents, you will find WiFi around the camp, local South African wine pairings, and even a pool for those wanting to take a cool dip in the bush. The 5000 acres of this private reserve is home to a host of big mammals and loads of birdlife. Just 1.5 kilometers away, the neighbouring Hwange National Park is home to an abundance of game, giving you the opportunity for many exciting sightings. For the conservationists and animal lovers, the white rhino encounter is sure to be a highlight of your trip. Learn about the efforts of the Community Rhino Conservation Initiative, a project that has heralded the return of white rhino into the region. To support this initiative, you can visit the wildlife sanctuary and admire the noble creatures that are being protected from endangerment there. Bomani is one of the few lodges in the area to give you the opportunity to see the Big 5. Guided walks are another great way to view the animals - the expert guides take great care to show you the best of the bush. While on foot, you can also duck into a large underground game-viewing hide, which gives you a safe place to get the perfect close-up pictures without disturbing the animals in their natural habitat. As you watch, you will see animals ambling to and from the water hole, just meters away. For train aficionados and animal enthusiasts alike, take a ride on the Elephant Express for a novel way to view the bush. Once the sun has set, night drives give guests the opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife - in the quiet of night, your heightened sense will hear all the sounds of the bush - like a lion, for instance, bellowing nearby to mark its territory. Bomani also offers "pump runs", or service visits to the eighteen waterholes it's responsible for keeping topped-up with fuel (they work with diesel-powered pumps). Such runs typically involve a picnic lunch in the bush and can be combined with a tour of a local school and village. Immerse yourself in the community with a spontaneous game of soccer or accompany the local children on their daily walk to school.
