About Marataba Mountain Lodge

Award-winning eco-hospitality in South Africa's exceptional north

Set in the Waterfall (Waterval) Valley, dramatically ringed by the flat-topped Waterberg escarpment, Marataba Mountain Lodge is a luxurious, Scandinavian-sleek safari destination that sets the bar. There are just five elegant, modern suites, serviced by a small team of extremely capable staff and guides. With sweet savanna grasslands, sour veld, and riverine forests, the varied habitats sustain wildlife that ranges from all of the Big Five, to cheetah, bat-eared fox, hyena and giraffe, and the world’s largest colony of endangered Cape vultures: around 800 breeding pairs. It's wild, it's super-stylish, and it's well worth a visit.

Property details

The main area is a sleek combo of wood and glass and stone and light, with a wall of windows opening directly on to a wide deck and the views beyond. The lighting is warm, and the furnishing comfortable and chic. The dining room's long table has a low-hanging chandelier; the lounge offers comfortable seating around a stone hearth. Built-in cushioned benches on the viewing deck surround a fire pit; and an infinity rock pool overlooks the vast unspoilt bush.

Walkways from the main area lead to five eco-suites, their outer walls subtly lined with reeds to blend with the surroundings. But the wall facing the view has no such cover. Here, floor-to-ceiling glass makes sure you miss none of the action. King-sized beds and wood-burning fireplaces are standard, as are rain showers and a covered private veranda. As always, everything is sensibly but smartly done with a light touch and the aim of keeping the bush at the fore.

The landscapes here lend themselves to a variety of activities, from walks and drives to boating excursions. Drives usually take place in the early morning and late afternoon, when wildlife is most active. Walks last a few hours and are led by experienced trail guides who will point out the tracks and signs and other often-overlooked aspects of the bush. Enjoy an en-suite spa treatment, followed by sundowners with incomparable views aboard the Miss Mara pontoon boat.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

The wildlife steals the show but don't miss out on a hike to natural rock pools for a dip and a picnic, or sailing the Miss Mara along the Matlabas River round boulder-like hippos.

Something to think about

Something to think about

Be prepared for a bit of a drive to reach activities as the lodge is set deep in the reserve - but with this scenery, we're not complaining.

Positive Impact

The impact of your stay

The Time + Tide Foundation is dedicated to preserving natural environments and supporting nearby communities, and guests contribute to sustainability purely by visiting their hotels. The foundation focuses on community and school-based learning, female empowerment, health, and wildlife conservation. Through initiatives like student sponsorship, it aims to ensure the long-term prosperity of wildlife economies and foster positive social change in Time + Tide communities.

A contribution of $10 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
