May your next celebration be memorable
It’s big, it’s bustling, it’s a little bit intimidating, there’s a lot of beeping, and it definitely takes kamikaze tuktuks to another level, but leave a little time to explore Bangkok and you’ll find the gems that are worth a linger. The Grand Palace is a glorious introduction to Thai architecture, as are Wat Pho and the nearby Temple of Dawn, and Jim Thomson’s teak house always draws the gazes. But life is lived on the streets here, and a wander on foot will reap the ultimate rewards: get lost in Chinatown, wander through the maze of sois and visit one of 400 temples, snack on street food (head to the areas around the office blocks and take advantage of the lunch trade), haggle in a market – and then end off with a float down the Chao Phraya River on a long-tail and a sundowner in a chichi cocktail bar.
Bangkok is everything all at once with a wealth of history, architecture and cuisine to absorb. One of the most famous sights is the Grand Palace, which remains a pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhists cuts a striking figure, and on its grounds you'll find the serene Temple of the Emerald Buddha. On a tour of the city, you can also visit world-renowned Jim Thomson's teak house, the gleaming Temple of Dawn and around 400 others, fascinating museums and markets that sell everything from fresh blooms to fabulous street food. Why not take a longtail boat ride down the Chao Phraya River for the best view of Bangkok and end off with a riverside cocktail?
It would be rude to say anything else but the food. From high-end fusion to no-nonsense, hole-in-the-wall noodles and fiery, spicy street curries, you haven’t eaten Thai food until you’ve eaten it in Bangkok.
Avoid the stress of the traffic and make friends with the BTS (Skytrain). Oh, and forget the Kho San Road, Thonglor with its uber-cool mixologists and hip night-time venues is the place to be.
Just like any big city in the world, keep your wits about you in busy areas, especially the popular tourist spots, and if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
