Benguerra Island Trips & Tours

The second largest island in Bazaruto is home to stunning lodges to make all your island dreams come true.

The beautiful Benguerra Island is a tropical gem off the coast of Mozambique. Declared a National Park in 1971, the island is the second largest of the Bazaruto Archipelago and home to Africa's only population of the rare dugong. The island is also rich in wildlife, with over 140 bird species in the forests, wetlands and freshwater lakes in the interior. The warm waters beyond the shore are also brimming with fish and stunning corals. There are activities to keep to having fun for days: Sail a traditional Dhow boat, enjoy a dive in the warm, clear water; snorkel, or take part in an epic deep sea fishing adventure.

What to do in Benguerra

The second largest island in the Bazaruto archipelago, Benguerra is a paradise wrapped in golden beaches that melt into water as clear as glass. Diving and snorkelling are at the top of the activities list and, thanks to its location in a marine national park, there is much to see including clouds of tropical fish, dugong and sea turtles. There is also ample opportunity to explore by boat, with the chance to scan the water for the spout of a whale, do some deep sea fishing, or take a sunset sail in a dhow. The beaches are spectacular, whether you’re stopping for a palm-shaded picnic, searching for rare pansy shells (always leaving them behind, of course) or riding horseback in the waves. If you fancy seeing the whole island in one go, take a guided drive amongst the lakes and forests where around 140 bird species flutter between the trees.
