Enthralling and rife with mystic energy, this Inca city is much more than a gateway to Machu Picchu

In the native Quechua language Cusco means “navel of the world”, and, true to form, the city was once the capital and geographic centre of the powerful Inca Empire. Nowadays, it's more the historical and tourism capital of Peru, and the gem of a city emanates history through its stunning architecture, Inca sites, and iconic landmarks. Nestled right in the Andes mountains, the setting is dreamy: picture narrow cobblestone streets and a sea of terracotta tiled roofs against the backdrop of the mountains and azure skies. So, what to do? Climb the streets of artsy San Blas for the best views, visit the bustling San Pedro market, explore the city’s Inca ruins, check out the local gastronomy followed by an exciting night out, or set out on a quad bike adventure across the nearby mountains... However you choose to spend your day in Cusco, you’ll go to bed with a smile on your face.

What to do in Cusco

Once the capital of the Incan Empire, Cusco is an emblem of Peru's past - it was even designed in the shape of a puma. Explore the city on foot, admiring Incan ruins and Spanish architecture (and learn about the temples and palaces that once stood in their place). Most of the city's highlights, markets and museums are within walking distance of the main Plaza de Armas, which is a whirl of activity and history on its own. And be sure to stop at a local restaurant or two to get a taste of Peru's delicacies - then learn how to make a few dishes yourself.

There’s an energy about Cusco! A melange of Inca, colonial and modern times, this mystical city has a way of winning over travellers from all walks of life.

Off the beaten track

Off the beaten track

Closer to the main square it can feel as though Cusco is overcome with tourists, but there are plenty of spots to discover away from the hubbub. Wander the cobblestone streets in search of little plazas, forgotten churches and artisan workshops or head to the beautiful eucalyptus woods behind Saqsayhuamán.

Something to think about

Something to think about

It’s highly advisable to spend the first day resting and drinking all the coca leaf tea you can take. Cusco sits at a lofty 3,400 metres, so you’re better off taking it slow and acclimatising than risking ruining your visit with a case of soroche.
