Joanna’s Egyptian Adventure
An unforgettable journey on the Nile
Just like its glitzy older sister, Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada has earned its stripes in the world of diving. The waters of the Red Sea are warm, calm and crystal-clear and with countless endemic fish and almost 500 species of coral, both diving and snorkelling are very special experiences. Within easy reach of most hotels in the area is the Dolphin House Reef, a colony used by local dolphins as a nursery, whilst Careless Reef is home to two coral towers and a good population of eels. But that’s not all Hurghada - and its surrounding white sand beaches and pretty bays – has to offer. This region is home to some of Egypt’s megawatt hotels, where luscious spas and swimming pools are the name of the game, and it’s mandatory to end each day on the beach, dining on freshly-caught seafood, cocktail in hand. Activities-wise, there are unhurried boat trips and picnics in hidden coves, and, if you’d like to head further afield, there are desert excursions, camel rides and quad bike adventures.
Start with a recommended trip or create one from scratch
At first, you could be on a beach in Greece... and then you spot the mosques and camel trains, and the magic of Hurghada is revealed. Beneath the clear, calm waters, there are almost 500 species of coral in surreal formations, ready to explore on diving and snorkelling excursions. A highlight is the Dolphin House Reef where aquatic mammals birth their young. For the really adventurous, night dives are also available. Take the time to laze on the beach (at some resorts, you'll have the sand all to yourself), before tucking into Hurghada's fabulous seafood. If there's a few hours left over, explore the desert on camel or quad bike, or peruse Old Hurghada's bizarre bazaars.
The chance to wash off the dust and relax for a few days at the end of an action-packed trip. There are easy flights to Cairo too, making a return flight home a doddle.
Shake off the crowds in El Quseir, the epitome of a sleepy beach town a mere 2 hours from Hurghada, with equally as fabulous diving and a charming Old Town to wander around between dips.
Sadly, Hurghada and some of the surrounds have fallen victim to over-enthusiastic development in recent years, and the town is not as charming as it once was.
