Immerse yourself in their world
If you're in Peru, you'll probably have to stop by Lima at some point, even if it’s just to catch a connecting flight. But the so-called City of Kings is certainly worth spending at least a couple of days in... This sprawling and vibrant urban metropolis has an incredible history worth exploring, evident in the colonial buildings, beautiful museums and pre-Incan ruins that blend in with the edgy, modern buildings. It’s not all history though, and there’s plenty of contemporary art and culture, a lively nightlife scene and the perfect beaches to try out a surfing lesson too. And the food! Oh, the food. The city’s history of immigration has resulted in some of the most unique and celebrated dishes in Peruvian cuisine. Just sit down for a good ceviche, causa and Pisco sour overlooking the ocean and your visit to Lima will have been worth it.
Peru's capital city is perched along the cliffs of the Pacific coast and offers a mix of beachside activities, boho neighbourhoods to peruse, and its fair share of remarkable architecture. Visit the fascinating pyramid at Huaca Pucllana, Museo Larco, which houses Peru's most important collection of Pre-Columbian artefacts, and peruse the Mercado Indio. For the ultimate view of Lima, paraglide off the nearby cliffs, or learn to surf in the bay below. When it comes to nightfall, you'll be spoilt for choice. This is the city with a National Pisco Sour Day after all...
Apart from the gastronomy? Those humbling ocean views. Walking along the lively Miraflores promenade you’ll get unrivalled views of the bay of Lima and the deep blue vastness of the Pacific Ocean below the city’s rugged cliffs.
Although Lima is home to two of the top 10 restaurants in the world, the city is rife with delicious eateries that will blow your mind - without blowing your budget. Seek out a local foodie and discover the amazing dishes on offer in the markets, huariques and roadside joints.
Keep in mind that Lima is a huge city of well over 10 million people so the more touristy neighbourhoods are not necessarily representative of the rest of the city. Be prepared to come across some less attractive spots and harsh contrasts (and a healthy dose of traffic, too!).
