May your next celebration be memorable
An hour on the ferry from Spain, at the meeting point between two continents, Tangier couldn’t be less European if it tried. In fact, the coastal city doesn’t really fit into any box thanks in part to its colourful history, squabbled over by powerful European nations, and artful eccentricities that attracted everyone from Matisse to Mick Jagger. Today, elements of the heady decades remain but serve merely as a reminder as investment floods in and sophisticated boutiques and hotels outnumber dilapidated buildings. At the centre of it all is the Grand Socco, or Grand Square, the gateway between the old and new city, and the perfect starting point for a wander. Stroll past bookshops and havens of antiques to the old Art Deco cinema, the Kasbah museum, and the shady trees of the Mendoubia Gardens, before ending at the Petit Socco. Then, scoot down to the iconic Al Hafa Café for the sweetest mint tea overlooking the sapphire seas.
Despite being the last stop before Spain, Tangier isn't the mini Europe you might expect. In fact, there's a bit of everything, with old and new (and some in-between!) sitting alongside the modern and the traditional, all of which amalgamate in the Grand Socco market. Delve into the past at the Kasbah Museum or pretty Mendoubia Gardens, get to know the thriving artistic scene at the bevy of galleries, or even venture out to the 'Caves of Hercules' where the legendary figure is said to have lived. Tangier is on the coast so a day (or three) on the beach, sunning, swimming or learning to surf is blissful. And if you need a pamper, those traditional hammams are calling.
There’s a lack of traditional ‘sights’ in Tangier, but that’s all part of the charm. This is a slow city, where ruminating strolls past Islamic and Berber architecture and people-watching over a mint tea are the name of the game.
Take a 20-minute taxi ride to the Caves of Hercules where, according to legend, the mythical hero lived in-between his heroic endeavours. Whether you believe it or not, it’s a great place to escape the heat and has a superb view of the Atlantic Ocean.
Traditionally, families eat at home in Tangier and restaurants, especially in the evening, are informal and often with no menu. So, just sit back, and enjoy…
