Annie’s Spectacular South Luangwa Safari
The stuff of your safari dreams
Every minute, 650 million litres of Zambezi water plummet into the Batoka Gorge on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, creating one of the world's most splendid sites – the Victoria Falls. And if you’re on safari in southern Africa, visiting them should be top of your list! Straddling no fewer than four countries (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia), the falls can be viewed from both Zambia and Zimbabwe. Start off gently with a walk along the precipitous edge of the waterfall, then get active – go bungee-jumping or white-water rafting, take a helicopter flight or swing across the gorge. They don’t call Vic Falls the "Adventure Capital" for nothing!
Start with a recommended trip or create one from scratch
A highlight on any Southern Africa trip, seeing Vic Falls in all its pounding, dramatic, mesmerising glory is unforgettable – and there is plenty to keep you busy in the area. Firstly, we recommend a walk (guided or unguided) to get a feel for the sheer enormity of the waterfall, before taking to the skies and marvelling from above in either a helicopter or a microlight. Both offer incredible views and big, bucket-list ticks. To really get the adrenalin going, there’s a selection of daredevil activities to choose from – bungee jumping, gorge swinging, white water rafting and trips to the iconic Devil’s Pool spring to mind – but if something more sedate is on the cards, there are languid boat trips on the Zambezi, sundowner cruises and wonderful afternoon teas to enjoy. If safari is on your mind, there are a couple of options to choose from. Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park offers good game viewing of elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra (sadly no big cats) as well as fantastic rhino tracking opportunities and walking safaris. Otherwise, take a day trip to Botswana’s Chobe National Park for the Big Five and river cruises to see the hundreds of elephant the park is rightly famous for.
Zambia’s most famous attraction is worthy of all the fuss. Even if you’re not sure about dangling from the end of a bungee cord, 36 metres above the Zambezi, you'll find plenty of activities to keep you busy for days, from elegant afternoon teas to sundowner boat cruises.
Take a walk (or swim!) on the wild side with a guided tour of Livingstone Island, a speck of land on the edge of the falls, and the place where explorer David Livingstone first glimpsed the spectacular "Smoke That Thunders".
Fluctuating water levels throughout the year impact on certain activities, so if you’ve got your heart set on white-water rafting or taking a plunge in Devil’s Pool, the world's most extreme rim-flow pool, then plan your dates carefully.
