The best places to explore at this time of year
Nature's blockbuster premieres arrive with theatrical timing. The Great Migration thunders across Tanzania's plains like a wildlife cavalry charge, while Uganda's forests offer sublime gorilla encounters on newly dried trails. Peru reaches peak magnificence with the Inca Trail at its most traversable.
This is the beginning of the dry season in Uganda and a prime time for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The trails are firm, the forest is buzzing with life, and the sightings are reliably incredible. For an even more unforgettable adventure, combine your trek with game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park or a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel.
Welcome to the sweet spot in Indonesia: the dry season has arrived, but the crowds haven’t. Bali’s beaches and rice terraces are glowing in the sun, the dragons of Komodo are active, and Java’s temples are at their ethereal best in the morning mists. In fact, June (and April and May!) are just about ideal for most experiences, whether you’re island-hopping, surfing, diving, hiking volcanoes, meditating in the jungle or cultural deep-diving.
June is a blockbuster month in Peru. The highlands are crisp, the skies crystal-clear, and the Inca Trail is in peak condition. In Cusco, the Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) brings ancient traditions to vibrant life. It’s the start of peak season for good reason: whether you're hiking to Machu Picchu or exploring the floating villages of Lake Titicaca, Peru is spellbinding this time of year.
July is another good month to trek with the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. The chance of rain is low, making visibility excellent, and the forest trails are dry and clear, making the hiking a touch easier. It’s also a great time for golden monkey sightings and a more ‘traditional’ safari in Akagera National Park - an excellent combination with Volcanoes.
