The best places to explore at this time of year
The world slips between seasons with theatrical flair. Japan's first cherry blossoms unfurl while India explodes with Holi's technicolour madness. South Africa delivers the perfect safari-and-wine duet, while Zambia's rivers transform dusty landscapes into watery wonderlands.
March marks the beginning of cherry blossom season in southern Japan, and it's as beautiful as you might imagine. Many others may have the same idea, however, so it’s best to book at least a year in advance. But, it’s absolutely worth it. As well as the cherry blossoms, Kyoto’s temples blush pink, Tokyo’s parks fill with picnicking locals enjoying the bright skies of spring, and the streets are abuzz with seasonal food and festive joy. It’s also the tail end of ski season, making this a great time to blend snowy mountains with the cities – and perhaps some hot spring bathing, too.
March offers the best of both worlds in South Africa. Cape Town and the Winelands are still basking in summer sunshine, making it a great time for wine tasting in Franschhoek as well as beach days in Clifton. In the north, the Kruger and Madikwe are starting to dry out and enter their prime safari season, with excellent game viewing around every corner. In fact, March is the kind of month where everything just works in South Africa, with wildlife, wine, and weather all in perfect sync.
Laos, one of Asia’s most soulful, slow-travel destinations, is beautiful in March. The weather is dry and warm before the heat of April sets in, making it an ideal month for exploring Luang Prabang’s temples and the numerous waterfalls and markets. The Mekong is calm and scenic river cruises are in full swing.
March means Holi in India and it’s one of the most joyful, unforgettable ways to experience the country (although booking in advance is a must). Rajasthan is dry and warm, ideal for exploring the forts, markets, and exquisite palaces, while Goa and Kerala are peaceful, relaxed and sunny. Combining both regions – and with a little time tiger spotting in Ranthambore – is one of our favourite itineraries at this time of year. And, if the snow leopards are on your bucket list, it’s still a great time to visit the Himalayas
