Part of the famous Golden Triangle that links Delhi and Jaipur, Agra is officially in the quintessentially Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It’s a small town, straddling a languid bend of the holy Yamuna River, and, of course, home to the Taj Mahal. Built by emperor Shah Jahan in the early 1600s as a tribute to his favourite wife, there’s no greater ode to love in the world and the gleaming white marble minarets and delicate florals are spellbinding. Despite the hype, it’s every bit as good as you would hope and laying your eyes on it for the first time is worthy of every single cliché – it really is that spectacular, humbling, and jaw-droppingly beautiful. Spend as much time as you like here, morning, noon and evening, and then dip a toe into Agra’s other sights, including the Agra Fort and the smiling villages on the far side of the river.

Beyond its marble masterpiece, this former Mughal capital weaves an intricate tapestry of imperial grandeur. While the Taj Mahal rightfully steals hearts at sunrise, Agra Fort's red sandstone walls whisper tales of emperors and intrigue. In the atmospheric lanes of Kinari Bazaar, marble artisans chip away at their craft while the aroma of kebabs and cardamom-laced petha sweets fills the air. Whether you're discovering the 'Baby Taj' along the Yamuna River or exploring the haunting beauty of Fatehpur Sikri, each corner reveals another facet of India's golden age.

Peel yourself out of bed for a sunrise cycle around the Taj for more memory-card filling enjoyment and if bikes are your thing, peddle out to Fatehpur Sikri, an ancient town on the road to Jaipur.
The Taj can draw crowds of 50,000 people per day on busy weekends so as magical as it is, you will be sharing it with more than a few others. Sunrise visits can sometimes help beat the rush, but also bear in mind that it’s often foggy until at least 8am.
