Timbuktu is the No. 1 Tour Operator in the 2024 edition of the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards!
A major milestone indeed
Imagine the best beaches in the world, and combine this with the Scottish Highlands (on a sunny day), throw in a smattering of French Riviera chic and finish up with some of Africa's most iconic wildlife and you have South Africa’s Garden Route. Stretching almost 300 kilometres from Mossel Bay in the west to Plett in the east, the lush coastline is a compilation of the country’s highlights. And it doesn’t end with the scenery. Activities are as varied as the lush topography – explore hiking trails in Wilderness, whizz through the forest canopy in Tsitsikamma, spot lions in Gondwana and drink cocktails in Plett … and that’s just the beginning.
Start with a recommended trip or create one from scratch
If you can’t decide what you want out of your South Africa holiday, head for the Garden Route to experience a little bit of everything the country has to offer, all rolled in to one easy-to-manage (and pretty damn beautiful) package.
It might not be totally off the beaten track, but we highly recommend spending an extra day in the pretty town of Knysna to snorkel with the endangered Knysna seahorses. Endemic to South Africa, the teeny-tiny creatures have survived for over 40 million years – quite the experience!
The main towns and attractions of the Garden Route are, of course, worth the fuss, but they are becoming increasingly busy. Take the plunge and head off the well-trodden path to make the most of your trip. You never know, you might stumble across a hidden gem or two or three…
