Masoala National Park Safari Trips & Tours

A magnificent mix of rainforest, mountain and beach in one magical, wildlife-filled, biodiversity hotspot.

Masoala is the largest of Madagascar’s protected areas (quite a feat when you consider them all) yet also its least visited. Established in 1997, the park preserves a unique ecosystem of rainforest, complete with glorious pallisander trees, wild ginger plants, and multi-coloured orchids, mountains, and the mangroves and coastal forests of Nosy Mangabe, an offshore island reserve. If a dinosaur was to appear amongst the ferns, you probably wouldn’t be surprised – and what you will find isn’t far off: tomato frogs and chameleons, leaf-tailed geckos and serpent eagles, and the incredibly rare red-ruffed lemur. The hikes and treks here are immense, as are the whale-watching opportunities from land or sea – or you may simply wish to stroll along the near deserted beaches and see what you stumble upon…

What to do in Masoala National Park

This isn't your typical hop-skip-and-jump destination - Days drift by to nature's own timetable. Paddle along the shoreline in kayaks, set sail in traditional pirogues, or venture into the primary rainforest where red ruffed lemurs command the canopy and the remarkable helmet vanga steals the show. As darkness falls, night walks reveal an entirely different cast - peculiar aye-ayes forage overhead while wide-eyed nocturnal lemurs peer from the branches. Snorkel straight off the beach amongst darting reef fish, or paddle out to secret coves for world-class underwater exploration. Pop over to sacred islets, wander through coastal villages, and chat with locals about life on Madagascar's wild edge. Wildlife enthusiasts will be kept properly busy - eight different lemur species lurk in the leaves, ground-rollers dash through the understory, and the rather dashing lowland streaked tenrec might make an appearance. The gentle lapping of waves against the shore becomes your daily soundtrack, and before long, shoes feel like a distant memory from another life entirely.
