India Travel Guide
Make the most of your India trip and start planning!
Bold and beautiful, just like the Bollywood stars that frequent the city’s in-the-know hot spots, Mumbai takes the title as India’s largest metropolis. It’s not easy to sum up a place this staggeringly enormous and packed-to-the-rafters with human beings (and animals!), but really that’s what it’s all about. People come to Mumbai to make it big, be it artists or film stars, labourers or city workers, and the furious rush of energy that smacks you in the face as soon as you touchdown on the tarmac doesn’t stop, day or night. On one hand, this is modern India – gleaming skyscrapers and trendy young things sipping chai in beachfront cafes – but it’s also full of impressive relics of the past, the mighty India Gate and the imposing rail station are probably the most notable. But then there’s also colourful markets to wander, shops to fill several suitcases in, world-class museums to frequent and promenades to stroll. Best stay for a few days then.
Gothic spires pierce the tropical sky as local trains pulse through this magnetic metropolis like vital arteries. Behind the iconic Gateway of India, discover tales of empire in the corridors of the Taj Mahal Palace, or venture across waters to the mysterious Elephanta Caves. Morning brings fishermen hauling their catches at Sassoon Docks, while evening paints Marine Drive's 'Queen's Necklace' in golden light. From sampling street food at Chowpatty Beach to exploring the entrepreneurial energy of Dharavi, or catching an art exhibition in Kala Ghoda's galleries, this city wraps ancient spirituality and colonial grandeur in a thoroughly modern energy.
The food. Nowhere on the planet will you find such an extraordinary mix of flavours and styles, from blisteringly-hot khanji vadaat the street carts to exquisite seafood in hotel restaurants, it’s a rite of passage to try EVERYTHING.
Try and bag an invite to eat in a local Mumbai resident's house. They are extraordinarily warm and friendly and nothing beats homemade butter garlic crab or a sweet coconut curry.
You don’t come to Mumbai for rest and relaxation. Pack your walking shoes, a loose pair of trousers and get ready to dive, with fire, into the beating heart of the country.
